“I realized that McKinsey is a terrific learning environment full of interesting people and challenging problems.”

Starting out in Medicine

Surrounded by a buzzing emergency room at 3am at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, while waiting for a CT scan, my attention briefly drifted to the internet where I ended up at McKinsey.com. After a neurosurgeon who I often consulted announced that he was joining a company called McKinsey, I wanted to figure out what could be so compelling that he would leave medicine. Having no idea what "management consulting" was but knowing for sure that working overnight on the weekend is no way to live, I hastily clicked the "careers" link and applied online.

Several months later, and better caught up on my sleep, I was paged by McKinsey to come for an interview. Excited and not sure what to expect, I rearranged my call schedule. Quickly, I was introduced to "case" interviews and, in my mind miraculously, my interviewers were persuaded to offer me a Summer Associate position in the Boston Office.

Certain that I would not join McKinsey, I accepted a short-term position in order to figure out what consultants and MBAs actually do. After a summer filled with a great team, an interesting biotech product launch project, and lots of free office snacks, I realized that McKinsey is a terrific learning environment full of interesting people and challenging problems. After much consternation and excitement about the uncertainty of McKinsey compared to the fellowship I was about to begin, I accepted an offer to join the Firm's Washington D.C. office.

Making the Move

My passion is healthcare - I believe that my calling is to work to improve the quality of care for patients. At McKinsey, I have focused on helping hospitals improve quality, operations, strategy, and growth. Since joining, I have had the opportunity to serve hospitals of all sizes and varieties in the US, Europe, Middle East, India, and Singapore. What is amazing is how similar the problems and solutions are across the world - it seems doctors are stubborn no matter where they are trained!

A benefit of my travel is that I have had the opportunity to engage with our global healthcare practice, serve as the "American expert" for other teams, and attend meetings in great locations all over (McKinsey tends to know the best places to have meetings). On weekends, flying "home" has meant trekking in the Himalayas, visiting the Taj Mahal, snow skiing in Chamonix, and sand skiing in Qatar.

Life at McKinsey

While I maintain "platinum" status on three airlines, I am always happy to come home to the D.C. office because of my strong friendships with my cohort and colleagues. I'm also happy to return to a nucleus of healthcare practice folks who share my interests, to excellent training opportunities, and to a positive office environment.
