Transition

Contemplating leaving your current field to embark on a new path can be a daunting prospect. It may help to know that, at McKinsey, APDs are at least as successful as and stay at least as long as MBAs from the end of their first year through election to partnership in the firm. Most APDs and MBAs will start as Associates (or Jr. Associates); in some instances, they will start as Business Analysts/Fellows.*

Though the most important training comes through experience, we do send all new Associates who do not have a business background to our own three-week Mini-MBA program. This intensive course provides participants with the core skills taught in business schools. Sessions are held throughout the year, with each session consisting of about forty new consultants from around the globe. Participants gain an understanding of microeconomics, accounting, finance, marketing and business strategy. Participants report that the bonds and network they form with fellow Mini-MBA participants are just as valuable as the content they learn. Then all new consultants, independent of background, attend a one-week Basic Consulting Readiness (BCR) program. This program teaches our problem solving approach and knowledge management techniques, as well as our core values and guiding principles.
